Shasta College announces its 65th Annual Commencement ceremony which will take place on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Memorial Stadium (football field). To date, there are 883 applications for diplomas, 134 applications for certificates, and approximately 403 confirmed participants in the commencement ceremony.
Dr. Darrick Smith, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of San Francisco, is this year’s commencement speaker. Dr. Smith has worked in the educational field since 1998. He was the recipient of the California Wellness Foundation and Eureka Communities Fellowship for his dedication to violence prevention and community empowerment. Among other notable awards, he most recently received the Fannie Lou Hamer Award presented by the UC Berkeley African American Studies Department for his dedication to social change and the fight against injustice in the U.S. Dr. Smith is known for his work as a project advisor for Student Support Services Redefined for California Community Colleges, as lead researcher on the Bridge to Success Project, as a participant in the California Community College Chancellor’s Office committee on Re-envisioning Statewide Professional Development, as a consultant on equity and civil rights, and as a Board Member and design team member for the Roses in Concrete lab school project in Oakland, California.
