The Riverfront Playhouse’s Capital Campaign will present a special one-night performance “Remember When Rock Was Young – The Elton John Tribute” starring Craig A. Meyer, at the Cascade Theatre on Thursday, May 7th at 7:30pm to benefit the Playhouse’s campaign to build a new theater on the corner of Pine and Placer Streets in Downtown Redding. Prior to the performance, at 6pm, the Playhouse will host a celebration on the site of the new theater with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages provided by Market Street Steak House, Shameless O’Leery’s Pub, Mt. Tehama Winery, Burnsini Vineyards and Wildcard Brewing. Tickets are on sale now at the Cascade Theatre Box Office.
“This is an important fundraising event for the Playhouse,” Len Alexander, the theater’s capital campaign coordinator said. “While the audience will have a great time enjoying Craig’s fantastic musical interpretation of Sir Elton John’s biggest hit songs, they will also be helping us raise thousands of dollars, all in one extraordinary evening.”
Alexander expects that this fundraising model, if successful, will generate several Riverfront presented concerts each year at the Cascade Theatre. “There are a number of wonderful artists who would be delighted to come and perform in Redding to support the Playhouse. And, since our new venue will feature more than just theatrical performances, it is appropriate for us to begin to present music and other entertainment events that expand our audiences and enhance the viability of the downtown.”
Remember When Rock was Young features multi-talented musician and Broadway performer Craig A. Meyer, delivering a one-of-a-kind tribute to living legend Elton John in a spectacular musical journey through the years. His strong vocals, striking resemblance, and amazing talent on the piano brings back the magic of such chart-topping hits as Crocodile Rock, Benny and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Candle in the Wind. Backed by the fabulous Rocket Band, it’s the perfect celebration of the character, costumes and charisma of the renowned Sir Elton John. This unique and powerful show will truly have everyone remembering when rock was young!
Meyer has traversed all four corners of the entertainment industry, making strong impressions in theatre, film, television and music. On Broadway, Meyer created the role of Clinton Badger in MGM’s classic Meet Me in St Louis and toured nationally in Cats, Starlight Express, and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Regionally, he has starred in Forever Plaid, A Class Act, Crazy for You, 42nd Street, The All Night Strut and the West Coast Premiere of The Thing About Men.
Television and film appearances include guest-starring roles on Will & Grace, Good Morning Miami, Family Law, General Hospital and Fernwood 2nite as well as working with Alan Menken on Disney’s Aladdin, and with Tim Rice and Elton John on The Lion King. Most recently he was onscreen with George Clooney and Renee Zellweger in Leatherheads. In music performance, Meyer has toured internationally and recorded with music legends Barry Manilow and Frankie Valli, and has headlined for Princess Cruises around the world.
Throughout Meyer’s busy career, he was repeatedly approached about his striking resemblance to Elton John and his uncanny ability to sound like the rock and roll legend. Meyer was eventually persuaded to expand his repertoire and began impersonating Sir Elton John. Today, he is considered to be the best Elton John tribute artist, whose strong vocals, striking resemblance and amazing talent on the piano has audiences everywhere reliving the music of their youth. Meyer’s fully produced show has captivated audiences throughout the United States and abroad.
Tickets for the Cascade performance are $45 and $40. Tickets for the pre-show celebration and performance are $70 per person. Net proceeds from this event benefit the Riverfront Playhouse Capital Campaign.
