82-year-old hides in locked bathroom as man burglarizes her Redding home; poses as police

On Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 3:51 am Redding Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Overhill Drive in reference to a reported burglary.  An 82- year-old Redding woman told officers she was awakened at approximately 1:50 am by a white male subject who was inside her residence and shining a flashlight. The woman called out to the subject who identified himself as a police officer. The subject told the woman he was investigating a crime that occurred in the neighborhood and directed her to stay in a bathroom.

The woman locked herself in the bathroom where she remained for nearly two hours. During this period she could hear the suspect rummaging through drawers and moving around inside her home. The suspect spoke to the woman through the bathroom door and asked if she had valuables inside the residence. The woman waited an additional thirty minutes after she believed the suspect fled before calling the police.

The woman told officers that the suspect took her silver 2003 Toyota Avalon as well as personal property. The suspect was described as a white male adult, 5-8, 180 pounds wearing a black T-shirt. On November 26, the vehicle was located unoccupied in a parking lot in the 900 block of West Street.

This case is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Redding Police Department Investigations Division (225-4214) or Shasta County Secret Witness (243-2319). A reward of up to $5000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in this case.
