‘Get Outta Town’ for Masterpieces in Sand

Want a sure way to beat the heat this weekend? Head out to the coast for a day on the sand. In fact, sand is the theme this Saturday (June 25), when the Friends of the Dunes hosts the 16th Annual Sand Sculpture Festival.

Come out to view the inventive sand creations or get a team together and compete in seven adult and youth categories, including “Best of Show,” “Most Imaginative,” “People’s Choice” and the coveted “Golden Shovel.” The Festival is a fun way for the Friends of the Dunes to teach about marine ecosystem restoration and preservation. So, escape summer, hang out at the beach and “Get Outta Town” to Humboldt County.

What: 16th Annual Sand Sculpture Festival

Where: Manila Dunes Recreation Area, 1611 Peninsula Drive, Manila.

When: Sat., June 25 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sculptor registration begins at 8 a.m. Judging at 1 p.m. Awards at 2 p.m. Recommended viewing times are noon to 2 p.m.

Cost: Spectators are free. Sculptor entry fees: $10 (teams of 1 to 6 members), $15 (teams of 7 or more).
