Free flu, whooping cough and pneumonia vaccine will be offered at a special clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Shasta District Fairgrounds in Anderson. The vaccine will be free for this day only.

At this special clinic, clients will be asked to fill out a brief, anonymous survey about vaccinations. This vaccination day is part of Shasta County Public Health’s ongoing efforts to test and update its emergency preparedness system.

“If a highly contagious and dangerous disease were to develop in our area, we might need to quickly set up vaccination clinics to help protect our community,” said Dave Maron, who manages Public Health’s communicable disease and emergency preparedness program. “We hope that offering free vaccine will encourage many people to bring their families down to get protected from the flu and whooping cough while helping us test our emergency response systems.”

Flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and up, which is a new federal recommendation. Whooping cough vaccine will be available for those 10 years and older. A new law signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last month requires children entering the 7th through 12th grades next fall to get the Tdap (whooping cough) vaccine before school begins, so this clinic offers an opportunity to fulfill that requirement now. Pneumococcal vaccine (“the pneumonia shot”) is also available for those with qualifying health conditions.

For those who are MediCal or Medicare eligible, please bring your identification cards to this event. There will be no out-of-pocket expense.
