Wine on a Dime: ‘Locawinos’

wine-on-a-dime

Like Locavores and farmers market junkies Locawinos know the joys of consuming a handcrafted product that was grown and made locally.

Visiting the Napa valley and enjoying a glass of wine in its own back yard is a real joy. It’s easy to recreate this experience for friends and family from your own patio or dining table. Out of town visitors in particular enjoy this. After all; once you have seen Mt. Shasta and the bridge there is only so much left to do.

Markets like Sunset, Holiday, Liquor barn, and Raleys all carry a good selection of wines from Shasta, Tehama and Trinity counties.

Many wines use the “Trinity” name such as ” Trinity Oaks” from St. Helena and “Trinity Vineyards” from Salem, Ore. Be sure to either ask for help or read the label carefully to insure getting truly local wine.

Wine on a Dime does not review local wine for several reasons:

1. Very few fall into our price range. This does not mean that they do not represent good value, most are under $20 making them competitive with wines from around the world.

2. While we are not professional tasters, we do want to give honest opinions. Our desire to support the local wine industry could affect our judgment.

Sparkling wines are made for the holidays. Unfortunately none are made locally. The good news is we have recommended several reasonably priced ones that are still available. GO has the Baron De Bellac Rose, TJ has the Zonin Prosecco and Contadino Pinot Grigio. Tonight is a favorite holiday – “Thursday” –  seems like a perfect time to open one of them.
