SCCAR to honor 2009 award recipients Lee Macey, Don Yost, Bill Forrest, and Levi Flores at 20th annual dinner event.

On Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, Shasta County Citizens Against Racism will hold its annual fundraiser and awards dinner at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant, 2184 Hilltop Drive, Redding.  No-host cocktails with Sylvia Hill at the piano will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner, awards and fundraising program begins at 6:15 p.m.  This year’s recipients are

  • Lee Macey and Don Yost – SCCAR Civil Rights & Social Justice Award
  • Bill Forrest – SCCAR Law Enforcement Award
  • Levi Flores – SCCAR Youth Achievement Award

Sarah Gallagher, recipient of SCCAR’s 2009 Isaac Lowe Scholarship will also be honored, as will  long-time board member, Fran Brady, for her many years of dedicated service to the SCCAR mission and to her work in the community at large.

Lee Macey and Don Yost are renowned for their many years of volunteer service to the mission and vision of SCCAR and their commitment to remediating social justice and civil rights issues throughout Shasta County.  They have been instrumental in gathering hundreds of citizens together to celebrate diversity at the annual Multi-Cultural Fair held in Shasta Lake each year, and are involved in many other important events and social justice activities.

Corporal Bill Forrest has been in law enforcement for 31 years, and currently serves on the board of directors of Shasta County Multicultural Advisory Board (formerly the MLK Board) for many years.  He is very active in volunteering his personal time, taking a stand for victims, and promoting equal treatment of all.  He is being recognized for his true passion for community spirit, social justice, and equality.

Levi Flores is a senior at North Valley High School in Anderson, and has been very involved in the Native American programs within the Anderson school district.  He is a leader among his peers, and has been instrumental in encouraging other youth to become involved in learning about and honoring their cultural backgrounds.

Awards Dinner Events

In addition to the awards ceremony, there will be a silent auction for numerous wonderful donated gifts, and a wine and book raffle.

Music during the no-host cocktail hour and dinner will be provided by jazz musician Sylvia Hill of Redding.  Ms. Hill is also the director of the newly formed Redding Children’s Choir program, through the City of Redding Recreation Department, that meets weekly at the MLK Center in Redding.
