Visitors Attracted to Art Hop

Each month for more than a year, Redding’s 2nd Saturday Art Hop has celebrated the works and performances of north state artisans. And although area artists remain the primary focus of Art Hop, word about the event has certainly spread beyond Redding’s city limits.

On Saturday, a trio of out-of-towners will join the dozens of locals in displaying works at participating Art Hop venues around Redding. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. For a map of participating venues and more information, click here.

The visiting artists sought out Art Hop coordinators Adam Mankoski and Troy Hawkins and inquired about being part of the event.

San Rafael artist Susan Goldsmith, who combines digital photography with acrylic and oil paints, will display her work at the office of Viva Downtown Redding (next to the Cascade Theatre). Goldsmith, who had a solo show at Shasta College two years ago, is an invitational resident artist at Whiskeytown as part of the recreation area’s Artist-in-Residence Program.

Art critic Peter Frank describes Goldsmith as “an impressionist in reverse” who paints by “beginning with the moment and expanding the visual comprehension of that instant into an abstraction of atmosphere, a dissolution of perceived reality into generalized optical excitation.”

Also joining Art Hop this month is Grass Valley artist Judy Bird (at Parmer’s Furniture and Design, 333 Park Marina Circle). Bird, who is pursuing her Master’s of Fine Art in Printmaking at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, does mixed media paintings, prints and also makes handcrafted soaps.

On her website, Bird writes that she’s, “Always liked mystery, the intrigue of finding a buried treasure, things that peak through the surface and layers of history within an artwork.”

Mount Shasta artist Haruko Sasaki, also new to Art Hop, will display her works at Maritime Seafood and Grill (1600 California St.). Born in Toyko, Sasaki is a multi-media artist who is currently working with painted silk.

Tomorrow’s October Art Hop kicks off at 5 p.m. at Everyday Fitness (2345 Athans Ave; formerly Total Fitness) with a free concert and performance of Middle Eastern music and dance by Pangia. After the event has concluded, a free outdoor movie (“Roman Holiday”) will be shown at the Market Street Promenade.

Make sure to check the Art Hop map, because droves of great area artists (names like Chuck Prudhomme, S.A. Barone, Sean Randall — great show at Vintage — and others) are displaying works. The Westside Performing Arts Company will perform, Nathan’s Anthems is having a tattoo demonstration, artist and author Christy Dell is doing a live pastel painting.

Once again, there’s so much to see and do during Art Hop. See you out tomorrow night!
