Take a stroll into the 19th century at Heritage Days in McArthur-Burney Falls State Park on Sunday. This annual event has been running for 20 years and attracts 1,000-2,000 participants.
Activities include rope-making, spinning and weaving, beading, branding on wood and horse-shoe making. The most popular activity of both children and adults in years past has been candle-making. Participants are encouraged to bring berries, leaves, or anything they wish to include in the creation of their candle. Free apple cider will flow and the Old Time Fiddlers of Redding will play.
McArthur-Burney Falls State Park, whose centerpiece is the 129-foot Burney Falls, is within the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau natural region. Burney Falls was named after pioneer settler Samuel Burney who lived in the area in the 1850s. The McArthurs were pioneer settlers who arrived in the late 1800s. Descendants were responsible for saving the waterfall and nearby land from development. They bought the property and gave it to the state as a gift in the 1920s.
Admission for the event is the usual park entrance fee of $8 per car. McArthur-Burney Falls State Park is near Burney at 24898 Hwy 89.
