What if I told you there was a store where you could buy lightly used hardcover books in all genres, from best-sellers to obscure how-to texts, for 50 cents each? And paperbacks for 25 cents? Why, you’d jump right on your scooter and roar over there and stock up for the coming rainy season.
Well, there is such a store. Only catch is that it’s only open once every two months. It’s the Friends of the Library Big Book Sale, and the next one is this Saturday.
The Friends of the Shasta County Libraries, a terrific bunch of hard-working volunteers, collect thousands of donated books throughout the year. They sell a lot of them (cheap!) at the Friends store at the library, which is open daily (for hours, click here). But the books (and CDs and DVDs) come in faster than they go out, so every other month, the Friends sell off the excess at these Big Book Sales.
If you haven’t been to one, you should know that the sales are well-organized, the volunteers are polite and helpful, and the assortment is replenished as the books are picked over. It helps if you pay cash and bring your own bag.
The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redding Library’s community room.
Lots of other events coming up at the library. Click here.
- Another great resource for book-related events is the Barnes & Noble Booksellers store on Churn Creek Road. They’ve always got something going on, particularly stuff for the kids. Click here to see upcoming events. A reminder: I’ll be there at 1 p.m. Saturday, talking about mysteries and my books and the movie version of “Lonely Street.” Y’all come.
- Sad news: Local music fans were stricken to hear of the death of fiddle player and singer Amy Farris. An energetic redhead, Farris stole the show at the summer concert people in Redding are still talking about: Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women at the Cascade Theatre. The Austin native was found dead in Los Angeles. She was only 40. For more, click here.
- Our pals over at Enjoy magazine have just announced a photography contest. The winning photo will be on a future cover of the magazine. There are prizes, too. Click here for details.
- Overheard at my house: “When it comes to produce, you know how I spell ‘organic?’ O-N-S-A-L-E.”
