OK, the weekend’s here and it’s chock-full of events, but maybe you’re not into crowds. Maybe the thought of the throngs at the Turtle Bay Art and Craft Fair or the Fall Home and Garden Show leave you cold.
We’ve got just the thing. Big event, but quiet and spread out. Pleasing to the eye and the camera lens.
We’re talking sailboats, people. Beautiful sailboats silently skimming across the blue waters of Whiskeytown Lake.
The Redding Yacht Club hosts the 2nd annual Kennedy Memorial Cup regatta at Brandy Creek Marina all afternoon Saturday and on Sunday morning. Whiskeytown Sailing Club has races on Sunday afternoon.
Visit the marinas to get up-close looks at the sailboats and meet the sailors, or go to any of the great overlooks around the lake for the scenic vista.
- Be careful driving around Shasta County this weekend. Motorists could get distracted by Air Show 2009 jets roaring overhead.
- Two well-known Redding guitarists — Al Mires of Brown Shoe and Marc Soares of Indigo Brew — play Brazilian jazz on Friday evening at Vintner’s Wine Cellar downtown. No cover.
- NorCal Think Pink is looking for volunteers to help stuff bags for the upcoming Think Pink Day for breast cancer awareness. Bag-stuffing starts Oct. 5 and times are flexible. Call Sandee Blalock at 547-5726.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Surveillance,” an exceedingly strange crime drama directed by Jennifer Lynch and produced by her dad, the ever-creepy David Lynch. Little flashes of “Twin Peaks” as two FBI agents — Julia Ormond and Bill Pullman — show up at a small-town police department to sort out some brutal killings. Twistier than a bedspring.
