Saturday evening at Oak Bottom Marina Amphitheater, the National Park Service at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will host a special preview showing of the soon-to-be-released six part series entitled, “Our National Parks.”

The showing starts at 8 p.m. at the Amphitheater and will be presented by Park Superintendent Jim Milestone who will share insights about the film’s purpose and conversation he had with Dayton Duncan who helped write, direct and film the series over the past 10 years.

“Our National Parks” will premier on KIXE television, a Public Broadcast Service (PBS), beginning Sunday evening, Sept. 27, 2009.

Nearly 10 years in the making, the six-part, 12-hour documentary by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan traces the evolution of the national park from its birth in the mid 1800s to the late 1900s.

Filled with beautiful scenes from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, the series explores the stories of people, from every conceivable background, who were willing to devote themselves to creating new parks, saving crucial parts of our land from destruction and exploration-and in doing so, reminded there fellow citizens of he full meaning of democracy in America.

Superintendent Milestone will briefly discuss the history and establishment of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in the early 1960s. The Friends of Whiskeytown will also share with those attending some of the up-coming volunteer activities such as volunteer trail building days and the Sept. 26, “Pick Up the Lake Litter” Day (PULL Event) held annually at Whiskeytown to clean debris around the lake shore.

No reservation required and this Saturday’s event is free to the public of all ages.
