Up on Shasta Bally

New York artist Olive Ayhens came to Whiskeytown National Park in 2007 as part of the park’s Artist-in-Residence program, and was so taken with Shasta Bally that she spent a week on the mountain, creating work there.

Ayhens will talk about her experience at 6 p.m. today at Old City Hall, 1313 Market Street in Redding. A reception will open the event at 5:30 p.m.

Ayhens has won numerous awards, including a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship. Tonight’s program is a collaboration between the Whiskeytown Artist-in-Residence program, the Friends of Whiskeytown and the Shasta County Arts Council.

  • The Downtown Redding Beer and Wine Festival is looking for volunteers to work during the Sept. 19 event. This year’s festival will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the downtown mall. • Hats off to Jeanne Lewis, a parking enforcement officer with the Redding Police Department, for reaching her 40th anniversary with the department. Lewis, apparently the longest-serving employee in city goverment, began work with RPD on Aug. 20, 1969. She has worked for five different police chiefs during her tenure.
  • Mark Your Calendars for Sept. 19, when the Shasta Land Trust is planning a clean-up along the Sacramento River behind the Raley’s shopping center on Hartnell Avenue. Volunteers must pre-register. For more info, send e-mail to afitzgerald@shastalandtrust.org or call 241-7886.
  • DVDs We’ve Seen: “Sherrybaby,” starring Maggie Gyllenhaal as a new parolee trying to get her life back together. Slow, but dreary.
