The Wild Magnolias
If you can get yourself to Mount Shasta this weekend, I’m thinking the third annual Mount Shasta Music Festival Summer Concert Series kickoff with the New Orleans band Wild Magnolias looks like a funky good time.
Concert promoter Eric Siems, a musician himself and a passionate music fan, has been trying to book the Wild Magnolias in our region for several years since seeing them at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, one of the great music festivals of the world. (I’ve had people tell me it’s the best music festival in the world, and The Wild Magnolias have been a hit there).
The concert is set for 4:30 p.m. (gates open at 3:30) Sunday at the Mt. Shasta Resort (1000 Siskiyou Lake Blvd.). Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. Call 918-4804 or visit Positive Productions’ website.
The Mount Shasta concert series continues on subsequent Sundays in August with Sila and the Afrofunk Experience on Aug. 9; Aphrodesia on Aug. 16; Papa Grows Funk on Aug. 23 and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee Booker T Jones on Aug. 30.
It’s looking like a high-energy series where attendees will probably want to move a bit — i.e. “shake yo body like you jest don’t care.” The views ought to be stellar. There’s not much snow left on Mt. Shasta, but it’s still such a killer backdrop from that beautiful golf course — Mt. Shasta Resort.
Also on the mountain on Saturday is the 17th annual State of Jefferson Brew-Fest at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m., featuring up to 60 brews from local and regional micro breweries. A band called Rock-It will be performing. I’m guessing their brand of blues and rock will sound better and better as an event like that progresses.
The thought of summer events at the ski park reminds me of some of the terrific shows I’ve seen up there in the past — reggae festivals with performers like Third World, Eek A Mouse, Israel Vibration, Luciano; and a pair of concerts by The String Cheese Incident. Bring back those types of events, huh?
David Lindley
In addition to Siems’ Mount Shasta Sunday concert series, he’s also producing a double concert with the amazing David Lindley (Jackson Browne/Ry Cooder) on Aug. 14 at Roxy’s Vet’s Club. A few tickets for Lindley’s early show (7:30 p.m.) are still available.
He’s also presenting blues veteran Coco Montoya on Aug. 15 at the Dunsmuir Grill and Creamery (5740 Dunsmuir Ave.) in Dunsmuir, and the Waybacks on Halloween at the Mount Shasta Resort. The Waybacks are frightfully good, by the way.
