For those who’ve been longing for a rockin’ night at MarketFest, tonight’s the night. Pine and Battery, a crunchy little rock band from San Francisco with a made-for-indie-radio sound, provides the music for the weekly farmers’ market/party in Library Park.
Music usually starts by 6 p.m., but get there earlier to grab some shade; it’s supposed to hit 103 degrees today. Remember to hydrate. Mmmm, beer.

- After I mentioned webcams yesterday, a loyal reader sent me this link to downtown Sturgis, SD, where the nation’s biggest motorcycle rally cranks up on Monday. Reader warns that nudity, hairiness and bad behavior can be witnessed during the festivities. I can’t wait.
- Mark Your Calendars: Aug. 13 is “Welcome Day” at Shasta College for new and returning students. From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., the lawn west of the bookstore will host information booths, product samples and door prizes. Free lunch and ice cream, too. Open to all students registered for, or planning to register for, fall 2009 classes. I might register for a class just to get the ice cream.
- That same night, Aug. 13, Shasta College will present the season’s final concert of the Shasta Vocal Institute, including music from “La Traviata” and “West Side Story.” Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are $7.
- The Dance Project has scheduled its next auditions for Aug. 22. The company is recruiting dancers and singers for its “Cascade Christmas” and “Steppin’ Out” productions. For more info on the auditions, call 226-6700.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Vantage Point,” an interesting thriller that takes a “Rashomon” approach to an assassination attempt, seeing the event through different characters’ eyes. Eventually devolves into the usual car chases and shootings. With Dennis Quaid, William Hurt and Forrest Whitaker.
