  • OK, now the gloves have come off. Summer heat is not messing around anymore. The National Weather Service says the final score for Redding’s high temperature on Monday was a record-setting 113 degrees. That is too dang many degrees. The current 15-day heat wave was already under way when my mother-in-law arrived to visit, so we can’t blame her. It won’t let up until this weekend, after she’s gone home, bless her heart. Fortunately, she likes fresh air and sunshine and melted patio chairs.
  • Customers of gas stations owned by Mountain Counties Supply Company have donated more than $6,400 to Mercy Foundation North to help battle breast cancer. The funds benefit breast cancer programs and prevention efforts at Mercy Medical Centers in Redding and Mt. Shasta, and St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff. Patrons purchased pink cards in support of the hospitals’ efforts.
  • DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “I Served the King of England, ” a racy little Czech number recommended by our pal Pavel Navratil. A very funny movie about the life of a Chaplinesque waiter who aspires to own a grand hotel. So many scrumptious food scenes that I’d recommend it for a Cookin’ at the Cascade film, but it does have lots of, um, tasteful nudity. What do y’all think?
  • What I’m Reading: “Los Angeles” by Peter Moore Smith. Just started it, but it’s intriguing so far. Protagonist is an albino screenwriter. I kid you not.
