As Redding high temperatures soar above 100 degrees this week, it’s nice to hear that the city has been recognized by a website called www.CoolCalifornia.org for its energy conservation and efforts to reduce greenhouse gases.
The website is a joint venture of government agencies, universities and non-profit organizations, and concentrates on efforts to reduce global warming. Redding is one of 14 cities and counties included as case studies of ways that agencies can help.
The Redding Electric Utility’s rebate program, which offers incentives for energy-saving appliances and lighting, saves 18.8 million kilowatt hours of energy per year, the city says. REU also has helped install 50 solar photovoltaic energy systems that cut carbon dioxide emissions by 83 metric tons per year.
The city also was cited for its internal recycling program and for requiring builders to exceed typical energy efficiency standards for new homes.

- Headline of the Day: Actually saw this yesterday on America Online’s news section: Sarah Palin Drops Another Bombshell. I thought, now what? Has she found another job to quit? Has she attacked her next-door neighbors, the Russians? Is she preggers again? Did she name the baby Bombshell? But no, the article was about how she might throw her support behind Democratic candidates who share her political beliefs, assuming she can find any.
