All in a Row

You’ve probably noticed already, but today’s date is 07-08-09. Yeah, yeah, that sort of line-up happens every year, but you might want to mark a mathematical moment of silence today when the clock ticks onto 12:34:56.

  • The Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce’s newsletter reports that the independent, locally owned businesses behind Shop Hop have donated $4,000 to the Shasta Women’s Refuge. The money came from Shop Hop’s third annual Cottage Tour in April. Way to go!
  • DVD We Watched: “The Life of David Gale,” starring Kevin Spacey as a prominent death penalty opponent who ends up on Texas’ Death Row for a murder he says he didn’t commit. Kate Winslet plays the magazine reporter who interviews him as the final minutes tick away. Good film.
  • While we were watching the movie, I started craving chocolate. (Not an unusual occurrence.) The doorbell rang. I went to the door and there stood two young girls who were going door-to-door, selling candy bars for some fundraiser. There’s a yummy coincidence. It was like trick-or-treat in reverse.
  • Recent Reads: Val McDermid’s “A Darker Domain” is one of those wonderfully intricate mysteries in which two cold cases turn out to be tangled together. “Dead Silence” by Randy Wayne White is the latest in his series of thrillers featuring Doc Ford, marine biologist and semi-retired secret agent. This one, in which a couple of torture experts try to retrieve loot and papers belonging to Fidel Castro, isn’t the strongest in the series, but it is gripping.
