The highlight of the holiday season is the “white elephant” gift exchange. Experienced white elephant goers strategically sit back and wait for each treasure that guests have pried out of their junk drawer or retrieved from storage to be unveiled. Then they strike, and the once-friendly exchange evolves into hyenas at a carcass, each guest trading for the best up-cycled prizes.
If the mere thought of a white elephant causes salivation, you can feed your hunger for re-gifting excitement at the “White Picasso” fundraiser for the North Valley Art League. Local artists and friends of the arts have searched the depths of their basements and the heights of their rafters to put together a show of original works, photographs and lithographs to be sold by raffle to support the league’s mission to promote the arts in the North State.
The artistic gems run the gamut from the contemporary, such as Roxy’s “Fireworks over Washington DC, to the traditional, such as Jean Gifford’s sweet original oil, “Hat Creek Area.” There is something for everyone and a steal at $5 for a chance to win your favorite work or 5 chances for $20.
A reception for the fundraiser is July 11, 6 to 9 p.m., during 2nd Saturday ArtHop, but tickets are available through July 25 at the Art League’s Carter House Gallery in Caldwell Park. A ticket drawing celebration is planned for July 25 at 7 p.m.
