Corner Booth: Free Movies

Our pals at Enjoy Magazine are sponsoring free movies in Caldwell Park, starting this Friday with “Winn-Dixie.”

The event, which includes food vendors and entertainment, begins at 8:30 p.m. in front of the former Carter House Natural Science Museum.

While the family-oriented films are free, attendees are encouraged to make a charitable donation. Contributions collected during the first month of “Enjoy Movies in the Park” will benefit the Redding Police Department’s K-9 unit, which plans to get a new police dog.

The lineup for other movies this month are: “The Sandlot” on June 12,  “Beethoven” on June 19 and “Marley & Me” on June 26.

The film series is funded by Rolling Hills Casino, Shasta Regional Medical Center and Palo Cedro Pharmacy.

As we reported here, the Redding Library offers free movies on Saturday afternoons, starting with the “Harry Potter” series.

  • DVDs I Watched on the Dreadmill: I really enjoyed “The Hit,” a sleeper crime drama from 1984, starring Terence Stamp, John Hurt and Tim Roth. Hurt and Roth are hitmen sent to fetch Stamp from Spain, where he’s been hiding out since he testified against British mobsters. Now watching “Killshot,” which is based on a novel by one of my favorite authors, Elmore Leonard. This movie, with Mickey Rourke and Diane Lane, went straight to video, but it’s terrific so far.
  • What I’m Reading: “Master of the Delta” by Edgar winner Thomas H. Cook is a wonderful new book, moody and twisty and atmospheric. It’s the story of a young teacher who’s the descendant of plantation owners and how his life changes when he gets mixed up with the “white trash” across town.
