Corner Booth: Heroic King

Sacramento Kings fans don’t have much to celebrate these days — worst record in the league, dwindling crowds, bad luck in the draft lottery — so here’s something to make them feel better. Kings forward Donte Greene is a true hero.

Greene plunged into the American River on Memorial Day and saved a woman from drowning. The woman was leaning over the back of a boat when it surprised her by moving and she fell into the water. Greene, a former lifeguard, said he realized the woman couldn’t swim and “just jumped in” and helped her reach another boat.

  • HawkMan Studios present the paintings of James Parks through Aug. 1 at Crush Salon & Art Gallery on Bechelli Lane. A reception for the artist is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday; refreshments and music by Abigail Live.
  • While you’re marking your calendars, better write Redding Library on Saturday, June 6. The Friends of the Library have their used book sale (50-cent hardcovers, 25-cent paperbacks) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library’s community room. At 1 p.m., the library will screen “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in that same room. The library will show the other three films in the Harry Potter series on successive Saturdays, all at 1 p.m.
  • The California Department of Transportation warns that Highway 44 in Redding will be closed Monday and Tuesday nights (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) while construction crews work on the Auditorium Drive overpass. Interstate 5 ramps onto westbound 44 will also be closed each night next week as work continues on a bike-and-pedestrian tunnel. Watch for detours.
