Corner Booth: Toon Time

Along with the Redding Improv Players and other artists participating in this Saturday evening’s ArtHop, add our own Phil Fountain and fellow cartoonist Benita Epstein, who will be doing improv cartooning at Tapas Downtown.

Both of these clever artists sketch cartoons on big pads right before your very eyes. These are not caricatures, but full cartoons with punchlines and everything. Phil and Benita did a similar event at ANewsCafe’s anniversary party last fall, and they were a big hit.

• Craigslist Fun: In the “free stuff” section for Redding, I found this offering: Duel Recliner Couch. You can guess how this will go:

“I challenge you to a duel.”

“Accepted. Pistols? Swords?”

“Recliner couches.”

“WTF?”

• Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, and lots of restaurants are planning special events. My favorite has been a big ad for Tokyo Garden, which emphasized its “Sweet Mamma Roll.”

First thought: That sounds like fun, if “roll” is a verb.

Second thought: “Sweet Mamma Roll” sounds like a blues song.

Third thought: “Sweet Mamma Roll” sounds like a blues singer.

Fourth thought: Dang, I’m hungry!
