Jim’s Thursday Picks: Young at Art

dyarspick-copy

One of the great elements about 2nd Saturday ArtHop is its inclusive nature. I love that this month the theme is a “Celebration of the Young at Art,” where a bundle of area high school and middle schools are involved in showing work.

For a full list of participating businesses and schools, visit Enjoy! magazine’s website and click on the ArtHop logo. High schools involved include Shasta, Enterprise, West Valley, Foothill, Central Valley and Anderson New Technology.

Several venues will include activities for children to promote “Week of the Young Child,” including a special collaboration between the City of Redding Parks and Recreation department and the Shasta County Library. There will also be activities at:

Need 2 Speed, Infinite Designs, Abba’s Child Learning Center, Sue’s Java Cafe, Riverfront Playhouse — Downtown, and the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop.

The kick-off for this Saturday’s ArtHop takes place at 5 p.m. at  Vintage Wine Bar & Restaurant, where there will be a concert by Roswick (on the patio, weather permitting). Musician Mike Powell will perform at Vintage later in the evening.

This month’s ArtHop will also feature talented artists like Ragan Ragan (The Studio Experience, 3404 Bechelli Lane); Brandie Magdalena and Louis Heiner (Old City Hall Art Gallery, 1313 Market St.); Luke Lucas (Infinite Designs, 1189 Hilltop Drive); Brittany di Pierri (Nathan’s Anthems, 1358 Market St.); Angie Persel (Kimberly Nicole Boutique, 1510 Market St., downtown mall); Eli Heleniak (Carnegie’s, 1600 Oregon St.); Sharon McKelvie (Vintner’s Cellar, 1700 California St.); Kyle Hanson (Pacific West Graphics, 1455 South St.); Ricky Miller (Vintage, 1790 Market St.); Lura Kilpatric (Beadman, 2619 Park Marina Drive); and Heather Armstrong (Monica’s Vintage Inspired, 2425 Athens Ave.).

On the ArtHop postcard, I counted 38 participating businesses. Should be quite an evening.

So, ArtHop was my Saturday pick, but should you need to be rising and recovering on Easter Sunday, my pick is the brunch at Pio Loco restaurant (1135 Pine St., old Pine Street School).

Pio Loco’s Sunday brunch has been quite a bargain for awhile now. On Easter, the brunch will include fresh fruit, salads, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, apple smoked bacon, carved turkey, lox, bagels, mashed potatoes, funnel cakes, biscuits and gravy, cornbread, desserts and champagne. Cost for Easter brunch, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is $14.95.

The regular Sunday brunch at Pio Loco is $12.95, and includes an incredibly diverse selection of food as well. There’s also a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar, which has all the fixin’s for an incredible drink. The regular Sunday brunch runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
