Corner Booth: Downpour of Chitchat

Boy, it’s a short leap from “we need the rain” to “cabin fever,” isn’t it?

Saturday night’s ArtHop was fun, but otherwise this holiday weekend has been a nice time to stay indoors out of the wet. Reading, listening to music, watching the slam-dunk marathon they call the NBA All-Star Game and, of course, chatting it up here in The Corner Booth.

  • Interesting event on tap this week at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Anthropologist William Hildebrandt will give a talk on an archaeological dig along the Sacramento River between Redding and Anderson that revealed much about the Wintu tribe. Hildebrandt, who teaches at UC-Santa Cruz, is the co-author (with Michael Darcangelo) of “Life on the River: The Archaeology of a Native American Culture.” The event starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Turtle Bay’s visitor center theater. Admission is $3 for members and $5 for non-members.
  • Did you see the news item about the two nuclear submarines that collided in the Atlantic Ocean? A British sub and a French sub clipped each other, causing minor damage to both. With the whole ocean to putt around in, these two subs found each other. It’s as if there were only two cars in the whole nation and they still managed to have a fender bender. Except the cars wouldn’t be carrrying nuclear reactors and missiles . . .
  • Sweet Music: Normally, I’d leave the music recommendations to the much-more-qualified Jim Dyar, but I’ve got a new CD that I’m playing around the clock. “Already Free,” the latest by the Derek Trucks Band, is a terrific blues-rock album. Trucks, the young slide guitar genius who plays with The Allman Brothers, really shines on this one. He’s also married to blues singer Susan Tedeschi, who makes guest appearances here.
  • What I’m Reading: “A Corpse in the Koryo” by James Church, the first in a mystery series that features an investigator in North Korea’s rigid, closed society. Very interesting.
  • Are you reading a good book while hunkering down from the rain? Share with the rest of us in the “comments” section.
