One of my great joys when we lived in Albuquerque was attending film nights at the University of New Mexico’s student union theater. They showed foreign films and independent films and a few classics, often movies unavailable anywhere else.
Nowadays, Netflix delivers most such movies directly to my mailbox, but I still like the idea of sitting in a darkened theater with a bunch of people who really love film.
Shasta College has such a program of international films, led by instructor Leo Fong, and this semester’s screenings already are under way.
The next film, slated for Friday, Feb. 13, is “Caramel,” a 2007 Oscar nominee from Lebanon. The film starts at 7 p.m. in room 802. A class discussion follows.
Other films — including “Dirty Pretty Things” from the United Kingdom, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” from Romania and “Blame It on Fidel” from France — will show every two weeks on Friday nights.
- Another big event coming soon to Shasta College is the Opera Workshop’s production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” scheduled for Feb. 12-15 at the college’s theatre. For showtimes and ticket prices, click here.
