Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased from Shasta Women’s Refuge at 2280-A Benton Drive in Redding, or at local supermarkets. If you’re interested in donating auction items or volunteering to help, call Kristi Hanson at 244-0118, extension 202.
- KIXE-TV holds one of its big annual fundraisers next week as well. The Sweetheart Auction, which will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. on Feb. 5, allows viewers to bid on romantic getaways, gift certificates, jewelry and more, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Members of the Sweet Adelines’ Northern Gateway Chorus will sing and staff the phones (presumably not at the same time) during the auction.
- Eight nonprofit health organizations got a boost to help them through tough economic times as Mercy Medical Center in Redding handed out over $117,000 in grants. Recipients included CareNet Pregnancy Center, Northern California Center for Family Awareness, Life Light Pregnancy Help Center, Good News Rescue Mission, Shasta Community Health Center, Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, Mountain Valley’s Health Centers, and the Shasta Family YMCA.
- Mercy Foundation North, meanwhile, received a $20,000 grant from the Safeway Foundation. The money will be used for health services in Shasta and Siskiyou counties.
- In other health news, the county Public Health Advisory Board is looking for new members to advise on community health needs and solutions. Members must reside in Shasta County. If you’re interested, call 225-3761 for an application packet. Applications must be received by Feb. 13.
- Surviving the economic downturn will be the subject of a March 3 workshop from the Small Business Development Center. The workshop, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Shasta College Health Sciences center downtown, will focus on what small businesses can do to help themselves during tough times. The workshop is free, but early registration is recommended. Call 225-2770.
