They Fired All the Copy Editors, Part VIII: The updated weekend magazine ran today in the local paper. It’s apparently written and assembled by freelancers, and its new look is somewhat like Enjoy magazine. Hmm.
On the Kid Stuff page, my eye was caught by the headline “Teen Writer’s Group” (apparently just one teen writer can make a whole group, or maybe it just seems that way). The one-paragraph item also says “Topic’s discussed include–” Those cursed apostrophes! Grrr.
Better stuff on the advice page, where we find side-by-side medical headlines:
Study says kidney donors have no long-term issues
(That’s what happens when you donate both kidneys.)
and
Silent gallstones don’t require operation
(But those yakky gallstones have got to go!)
- Last night’s final Dinner-and-a-Movie at the Cascade Theatre was a lot of fun. I’d seen “Waitress” before but still laughed out loud in places. The dessert demonstration by Doni and Andrea (with silent backup by Kelly) was lively and informative, and showed up nicely on the big screen. We’d like more of these events!
- Other Movies We’ve Seen: “Slumdog Millionaire” was so good, I had to go out after I saw it and give myself a concussion by walking headfirst into a wooden sign. Not sure what that says about me or the movie. The film is exciting and funny, with standout performances by the child actors and an up-close look at India and its orphans. Nice reminder that people lead fascinating lives in other cultures, and we shouldn’t be so self-centered (with our concussions and all) that we forget it’s a big world out there.
- DVD I Watched on the Treadmill: “Wanted” with Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. Escapist fare for people willing to suspend disbelief so far that they’ll believe, at least for 110 minutes, that bullets can curve around obstacles. This assassin movie does, however, meet the federally mandated standard that requires Morgan Freeman to be cast in every film made in the United States.
