Good to see that, in these tough economic times, the city of Redding and local business organizations continue to pursue public art projects.
The Redding Redevelopment Agency this week approved the installation of shade structures and undulating blue concrete benches in the recently de-roofed downtown mall. Kelly wrote about the art proposal here.
Pretty soon, artist William W. Mueller will install his folded-steel sculpture, “Synergy #7,” in front of the Redding Library. Mueller is supposed to be in Redding next week to prepare the site, which is in front of the library’s main entrance. You can see a model of the $40,000 art installation here.
- In other arty news, the Shasta College Art Gallery displays drawings and other works by Lucy Puls through Feb. 20. This Friday, Puls will discuss her work in a lecture at 11 a.m. in the Humanities lecture hall, Building 400 at Shasta College.
- A big high-five to Tuscan Heights Lavender Gardens for winning the Retailers Choice STARS award at the recent California Gift Show in Los Angeles. The Whitmore company, owned by Lynette and Richard Gooch, won the prize for its organic lavender/herbal bath and body products and lavender culinary items.
- Congrats also to the Redding Police Department, which has been awarded a grant of $331,078 for its “Avoid the Five” anti-DUI program. The money, which comes from the state Office of Traffic Safety, will pay for equipment and overtime for drunk driving checkpoints, saturation patrols and sting operations.
