A firm based in Redding and Las Vegas will do lighting for the halftime show at the Super Bowl. Morpheus Lights, on Caterpillar Road in Redding, for years has been the lighting company for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which will perform at the big game Feb. 1. How cool is that?   • Redding Internet entrepreneur Kyle James got a huge birthday present this week. Reader’s Digest, which has the biggest circulation of about any magazine in the known universe, linked to his shopping coupon website, Rather-Be-Shopping.
  • Jeff Avery, a State Farm agent in Redding and chairman of the board of directors of Redding Chamber of Commerce, has agreed to be the latest victim, er, participant in Dancing With the Stars — Shasta County Style. Go Jeff!
  • Shasta Estates retirement community, on Buenaventura across from Sunset Market, recently opened its doors. The facility is a 118-unit “independent living community” with amenities such as housekeeping and meals. For more info, call 243-3014.
  • DVDs We’ve Seen: “Off the Map” with Joan Allen and Sam Elliott. A melancholy but hopeful little film about back-to-the-land types living in rural New Mexico. The landscape is stark and beautiful, and the acting is understated and superb.
  • My pal Frank sends this T-shirt slogan that author William Least Heat-Moon noticed in North Carolina and included in his latest book, “Roads to Quoz”: MESS WITH ME — MESS WITH THE WHOLE TRAILER PARK.
