Corner Booth: Pet Names

For the fifth year in a row, Max is the most popular name for dogs and cats.  Veterinary Pet Insurance regularly sift through the names of their 450,000 insured pets for most popular names. The top five names for dogs were Max, Molly, Buddy, Bella and Lucy. Top five for felines: Max, Chloe, Lucy, Tigger and Tiger.  Click here to see the full lists.

Experts say the best names are short ones that pets can understand, which helps explain the popularity of Max. That’s certainly why we named our first son Max. I wanted a name I could bellow in one breath.

Unusual names the insurance company found included dogs Rush Limbark, Meatwad, Peanut Wigglebutt, Admiral Toot and Spatula. For the cats: Edward Scissorpaws, Sir Lix-a-Lot, Snoop Kitty Kitty, Miss Fuzzbutt and Sparklemonkey. Click here to see the other weird names.

  • Here in the North State, it’s not too early to sign up for the 3rd Annual FurBall put on by Another Chance Animal Welfare League in Palo Cedro. The Yappy Hour and Dinner are scheduled for Feb. 21. The $35 evening includes a silent auction, live jazz by Brown Shoe Trio and “surprise comedy” by Riverfront Playhouse. You don’t want to be gulping a cocktail weenie when “surprise comedy” breaks out — trust me on that — but otherwise this sounds like a fun event.
  • On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Hawkman Studios hosts a reception and art show at Vintage Wine Bar to benefit Another Chance Animal Welfare League. The show, “Gone to the Dogs,” features work by Lydia Bee, Hollyn Chase and Kim Fitzsimmons. More info here.
