What’s the Haps?

Got a few things kicking around in the mailbox that sound interesting. You can’t, after all, stay trapped inside forever because of the rain.

• Tapas Downtown is celebrating its one-year anniversary from 5 to 10 p.m. tonight at the restaurant/bar at 1257 Oregon St. in Redding. There’s live music by Mickey Jones and Weety, and artist Share Hofmaister’s work remains on display. Call 247-7299 or click here .

• Singer-songwriters Megan Slankard and Jeff Campbell perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Vintage Wine Bar, 1790 Market St. in Redding. Click here to read Adam Mankoski’s great interview with Megan. Should be a nice evening. (Allison Scull and Victor Martin are having a CD release party at Vintage the following Saturday — Jan. 29.)

• An art reception for Barbara Enochian and Usana Weaver’s show, "Old Friends, New Art," takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fator’s Silk Purse Gallery (2600 Bechelli Lane) in Redding. The show remains up through April 25.

• The Cultural Cruise on Jan. 29 is a different event from 2nd Saturday Art Hop with its focus on major galleries like Turtle Bay, Old City Hall, Redding City Hall, North Valley Art League and the Shasta College Art Gallery. Look for more on the Cultural Cruise in the coming days.

• Elliot Randall and his band are playing from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday (Jan. 29) at Vintner’s Cellar Custom Winery in Redding. The San Francisco Americana songwriter and his band, The Deadmen, are set to release their sophomore album "Caffeine & Gasoline" in Feburary. The album was recorded and produced at Mission Bells Studio in San Francisco by David Simon-Baker, who has worked with Jackie Greene and The Mother Hips. I’ve really been digging Greene and Tim Bluhm (of the Mother Hips) so this project certainly sounds interesting to me.

Caught these guys last time and really enjoyed. I’m working on a story on bassist Bruce Calin (who played in Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion”) and plays in this group.

Five Northstate Songwriter Group members will each be performing 30 minutes of all original material. On the bill will be Still Married, Paul Howell, Pine Dogz, David Thompson and Nick Ciampi.
