Now that Turtle Bay Exploration Park will be losing its city funding, the museum/arboretum complex needs all the help it can get. That’s a good reminder that only one week remains in Turtle Bay’s big raffle.
The park is raffling off Earth-friendly modes of transportation, including a bicycle, an electric scooter and a Toyota Prius worth $27,000. The drawing will take place Monday at the museum’s big family event “Goodbye Sue,” which is a farewell ceremony for the T-Rex skeleton that has been on exhibit there. Redding Mayor Rick Bosetti will draw the winner.Â
Tickets are $25 each or three for $50. You can buy them at Turtle Bay or by phone at 242-3190. For more info, click here.
The “Goodbye Sue” event will run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and will include face-painting, crafts and stories for the kids.
- Turtle Bay has another big event scheduled for Sept. 19: A night of desserts and stargazing at Hat Creek Radio Observatory. Tickets for the open house ($12 for adults and $6 for children) must be reserved by Sept. 11 by calling 242-3108.
- On Wednesday, you can see the Redding Police Department’s K-9 Unit put on a demonstration at 5:30 p.m. at the pavilion area at Lake Redding Park. The unit is celebrating the arrival of a new dog to replace one that retired. Acquisition of the new dog, Yari, and its training were funded by $13,000 in donations from the community.
- Word comes that the Clover Club, the bar that’s served downtown Redding since 1939, is closing, and will be replaced by a new, larger nightspot called Capone’s. This is exciting. Another downtown saloon, just down the block from the Vintage Wine Bar & Restaurant and Market St. Steakhouse, could really be the tipping point for nightlife around the Cascade Theatre. Capone’s is scheduled to open after a couple months of remodeling.
- I made my first visit to Johnny’s, one block over on California Street, during the weekend. Seemed like an okay bar with live music, but it’s really unfortunate that they hung a Confederate flag from the ceiling. I know the rustic decor is supposed to be ironic, but some things aren’t funny.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Defiance,” starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber as brothers who led a band of Jewish partisans who fought the Nazis. Good war movie with a heart.
