Well, Pop My Toe

A scene of domestic cooperation, direct from our house:

Kelly and I were in our home office, facing our respective computer screens, back to back as if about to step off paces for a duel.

Then I got this weird cramp in the joint at the base of my big toe. Felt like that large knuckle had pressure on it, that it needed to pop. I wrestled around in my swivel chair, a fat Buddha in beachwear, yanking and twisting on my toe, to no avail.

All the grunting and cursing caused Kelly to wheel around and demand to know the nature of my problem. I explained about the toe knuckle and she took charge.

So there we were, a giant bearded man in a swivel chair and a tiny blond woman who’s got him by the big toe. She jerked and twisted, yelling at me to relax my leg so its own enormous weight could yank down on the rigid digit, but I was too busy squirming and thinking up new curse words.

At that moment, we both realized we were posed directly in front of the large window that looks out at our street. The blinds were open.

Kelly said, “I hope this is the picture the paparazzi get.”
