Corner Booth: Squeeze

A Redding woman will be a featured performer at an international accordion festival in British Columbia next week.

Sylvia Marie will perform July 10 at the Kimberley International Oldtime Accordion Championships. A native of Indiana, Sylvia often performs in the Redding area, including entertaining at senior citizen centers, and she teaches accordion workshops. Her past gigs have included performances with the Lawrence Welk Show and the Grand Ole Opry, as well as nightclubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles for more than 30 years.

  • Overheard: A friend, talking about the narrower, thinner local newspaper: “It looks like a flyer. Your carrier should put it under your windshield wiper.”
  • Another Sign the World is Going to Hell: Two University of Chicago freshmen have landed a book contract with Penguin to produce “Twitterature: The World’s Greatest Books, Now Presented in Twenty Tweets or Less.” Nineteen-year-old authors Alexander Aciman and Emmett Rensin will use the 140-character messages to summarize the plots of great works of literature. The book is expected in stores in the fall. Couldn’t they just phone it in?
  • DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Two Tough Guys,” a crime comedy from Spain about a soft-hearted hitman who is ordered to educate a mob boss’ inept nephew. They’re soon up to their ears in a kidnapping plot that goes way wrong. Very funny.
