Why do some businesses insist on putting loud televisions in their waiting areas? Worse yet, why do so many feel compelled to have those loud TVs tuned to the Fox “News” channel?
I was at a locally owned pharmacy and my prescription wasn’t ready on time (they never are, right?) and the only place to sit was near a flat-screen TV belching opinions. I tried to read, but no go. Instead, I heard an “expert” say Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor would be bad for American business. When pressed, the talking head admitted that he based his opinion on a 10-minute video snip he’d seen after arriving at the studio.
When my prescription was finally ready, I asked the clerk how he could stand that TV blaring all day long and he said, “You don’t even hear it after a while.”
I said, “It would make my head blow up.”
He couldn’t recommend a medicine for that, but I’ve got just the prescription: I’ll take my business elsewhere.
- If you regularly drive Highway 299 between Redding and Eureka, you’ll be interested in a public meeting at the Redding Library from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. California Department of Transportation officials will discuss the summer’s construction projects, which are expected to result in occasional long delays on that stretch of road. CalTrans will maintain a Web page with regular updates at www.caltrans2.info.
- Those of us anticipating a Kobe vs. LeBron matchup in the NBA Finals may be out of luck. LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Orlando Magic, 116-114, in overtime last night. Orlando now leads the series 3-1, which could prove insurmountable for the outmanned Cavs. One of the Magic’s little guys, Rafer Alston, was the hero last night, scoring 26 points, including six 3-pointers.
- Fun With Craigslist: In the “free” section of the Redding Craigslist, we find this offering: “40 foot bottom dump.” I don’t know what that means, and I’m afraid to hazard a guess. You’re welcome to insert your own punchline in the comments section.
