If your co-workers slump over their desks, needing a nap because of a morning carbohydrate rush, you can be sure they attended the Asphalt Cowboys Pancake Breakfast.
An estimated 10,000 people turned out for the annual event in downtown Redding on Friday morning, starting at 5 a.m. Volunteers served up pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and orange juice to the happy throng for five hours.
Hard to believe, but this was my first Pancake Breakfast, though we’ve lived here six years. Kelly always attends, but I’ve been out of town or otherwise engaged each time. Boy, was I missing out. Lots of fun to see friends and neighbors (and A News Cafe readers!) in the crowd that packed Market Street in front of the Cascade Theatre. The food was yummy, too.
Now I need a nap. I can only imagine how the 100-plus volunteers, many of whom were out there before 3 a.m., must feel about now.
Way to go, Asphalt Cowboys and friends!
- Mark your calendars for next Wednesday, when the city will hold its official ribbon-cutting for the South Bonnyview Road improvement project. Mayor Rick Bosetti and other officials will mark the completion of the project at the 10:30 a.m. ceremony in front of Fire Station No. 4 on South Bonnyview near Eastside Road. The $18.4 million project widened the busy thoroughfare from two lanes to four and added bike lanes and sidewalks.
- Buckle Up! The Injury Prevention Coalition of Shasta County reminds you to buckle your seat belt every time you hit the road. Police are cracking down on unbuckled motorists this month in the “Click It or Ticket” program. One in five Americans still fail to regularly buckle their seat belts, officials say, even though it’s proven to save lives.
