Bright and sunny now, but it was a nice weekend to stay indoors, watching movies and reading.
- DVDs We Watched: “Righteous Kill” with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino as two veteran New York police detectives tracking a killer who’s bumping off bad guys and leaving wretched rhymes at the murder scenes, and “Appaloosa,” a Western with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen as two lawmen who clean up a town run by Jeremy Irons. Both movies fall into the “buddy movie” category, being more about the relationship between the partners than anything else. Not great films, but enjoyable.
- What We’re Reading: “14 Degrees Below Zero” by Quinton Skinner, a suspenseful tale about a man who’s in conflict with his grown daughter’s boyfriend and his own internal demons. Before that, I read “The Betrayers,” a very good police procedural by James Patrick Hunt. Kel’s reading “A Mercy” by Toni Morrison. These are among an armload of books checked out from our superb local library.
- The Shasta Library Foundation has a big fundraiser this week that looks like loads of fun. “Life is Short . . . Eat Dessert First” begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Lots of bite-sized desserts, champagne and coffee, a silent auction, a raffle and the museum’s gecko display, all for $20 per person. You can buy tickets online by clicking here, or you can get them at Cold Stone Creamery or at the Friends of the Library bookstore inside the Redding Library. And, since it’s for a good cause, none of the calories count!
- Hope you didn’t plan to spend much time reading today’s local newspaper. Only 20 pages today, down from 24 pages last Monday. If the paper gets any skinnier, they’ll have to put a rock in each bag to keep ’em from blowing away.
