Live music update

There’s a forecast for some rain real soon, but also some nice live music opportunities.

At the the Cascade Theatre on Jan. 30 (a Friday), the amazing Leo Kottke. True brilliance on the 6- and 12-string acoustic guitar. He plays solo and what other way would you want him? I’ve heard him so much on recordings and seen video, but I need to see him live. Cascade manager Jeff Darling said this show is selling well.

There’s another great act that night (Jan. 30), North Carolina singer-songwriter Chuck Brodsky at Bernie’s Guitar for an Oaksong Society Concert. I hope to catch up with Chuck soon to get a few words about what he’s been up to.

By the way, appearing this Friday (Jan. 23) at the Vintage Wine Bar and Restaurant is San Francisco songwriter Jeff Campbell.

Next month a can’t-miss concert occurs on Feb. 28 with Robben Ford, Jorma Koukonan and Ruthie Foster. The ticket would probably be worth it for any of these three on their own. Koukonan, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, blew my mind when I caught him two years ago at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco.

I’m currently scouting out shows right now. Please post good shows you know of.

• I missed the improv comedy show with Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood at the Cascade Theatre on Jan. 17. About 800 people were treated to a highly entertaining show, Darling said. The crowd was into it from the start, Darling added. The two comedians from TV’s “Whose Line is it Anyway?” performed a long show — about 120 minutes.

• Fans of the Cascade have responded strongly to a recent donation campaign. The theater has raised $19,000 in mostly smaller donations. There are a lot of fans of theater out there who want to see that place continue to stay viable. That’s a great thing.
