Mystery Writers of America today announced its nominees for the Edgar Awards, and a slew of new names are among the nominees. Authors nominated in the “best novel” category include Karin Alvtegen, C.J. Box, Robert Ferrigno, Declan Hughes, Morag Joss and Lisa Lutz. To see the nominees in all categories, click here.
I’ve read the novels by Ferrigno, Hughes and Lutz, and look forward to the others. Congrats to all the nominees and thanks to the judges who sorted through hundreds of entries. I’ve twice served as an Edgars judge, and it’s a ton of work.
- Speaking of mysteries, here’s one from today’s NY Times: The average price of gasoline nationwide when President George W. Bush took office was $1.83 per gallon. Today, the average is $1.84. Of course, in between were those nightmare months of $4-a-gallon gas. Do you hear something? Sounds like the gluttonous laughter of Big Oil?
- A final mystery from our increasingly weird global climate: The Midwest is in the midst of its worst cold snap in years, and we’re breaking January warm-weather records here in Northern California. Temperatures in Des Moines, IA, never topped zero yesterday. In Chicago, the morning temperature was 11 below, and that didn’t include the wind chill. Brrr.
