I’m not sure what it is. Maybe we just don’t want to compete with the sun during the summer in the north state.
But I remember this from doing the arts section for so long: Fall comes packed with events.
Here’s a glance at some of the happenings that have flashed through my inbox as of late:
• Taj Mahal tonight at the Cascade Theatre. Taj has played the area quite a bit, but you could do a lot worse than an evening at the Cascade with this blues master. His knowledge of world music is pretty staggering. If he’s really into the evening, it can be special.
• The Volker Strifler Band at Gray Pine Farm in Oak Run. The Oaksong Society turns its attention to blues in a show in farm’s lovely meadow. Click here for info.
• Stage Door Cabaret in Mount Shasta events. Scottish National Fiddle Champion Jamie Laval performs there on Saturday, and Sedge Thompson’s “West Coast Live” will be taped there on Monday. For more on those shows, visit Jim Gilmore’s Jefferson Agrarian site.
• Sally Struthers in “Nunsense” at the Cascade on Wednesday. The “All in the Family” star performs in a proven comedy.
• Kris Bell at the Cascade on Friday (Oct. 3). The rock/country guitarist recently toured with “American Idol’s” Bo Bice. Bell married a Redding girl — Terri Brown — and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Shasta Fire Department.
• The Myriad at the Cascade on Saturday (Oct. 4). The band, which tours nationally and features three members with Redding roots, played an inspired show the last time it visited the Cascade. Redding songwriter Kristine Mueller opens the show and will perform with musician Marvin Allen.
• Fright Fest, student film festival at the Cascade on Oct. 10. Teens tend to love horor flicks. Now it’s time to see how good they are at producing them. Could be a very interesting evening to see the creativity of area students.
• Mount Shasta International Film Festival on Oct. 9-11. Festival organizer Jeffery Winters has built a proven festival, which is in its fifth year. Information about the event and all the films featured can be found on the festival site.
• Silent Film Festival at Old City Hall on Oct. 24-25. This annual event features an assortment of incredible films and live piano accompaniment. For complete information on the event, visit here.
That’s certainly not everything that’s happening (don’t forget the Second Saturday Art Hop on Oct. 11), but I think you get the idea. It’s fall. It’s time to come out and play!
