Virtuoso musicianship in the form of the five-piece ensemble Joy Kills Sorrow visits the north state for an 8 p.m. Friday concert at Bernie’s Guitar (3086 Bechelli Lane) in Redding. The concert is hosted by the Oaksong Music Society, which recently announced its summer concert series for its beautiful concert site at Gray Pine Farm in Oak Run.

Before we head to Oak Run, however, there are a pair of shows set for Bernie’s.
First, the Boston-based bluegrass/folk/jazz group Joy Kills Sorrow, which is supporting its new album "Darkness Sure Becomes This City," settles in on Friday at the guitar shop.
The band includes flatpick ace guitarist Matthew Arcara and mandolin virtuoso Jacob Jolliff, the first Berklee School of Music full-scholarship mandolin student. Vocalist Emma Beaton and bassist/vocalist Bridget Kearney wrote the bulk of the songs for the group’s new album. Banjo player Wesley Corbett, who has toured with Crooked Still and the Biscuit Burners, rounds out the group. (The north state’s incredible fiddle/cellist Tristan Clarridge is currently in Crooked Still.)
Tickets for the Friday show are $18.
On May 14, songwriter Juni Fisher performs at Bernie’s. Fisher was the 2009 Western Music Association’s female performer of the year.
Now, as for the Oaksong Society’s 2010 summer schedule, I’ll go into more detail as the shows get closer. The shows come with the option of a barbecue dinner.

• July 17 — Jeffrey Boussard and The Creole Cowboys. (This is the first-ever cajun dinner and dance party the society has hosted.
• Aug. 7 — John Reischman and The Jaybirds, and Laurie Lewis and Friends. (That’s a nice double bill.)
• Aug. 21 — Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas
• Sept. 18 — 6th Annual Hawaiian Luau and Concert featuring Bill Tapia and Friends
