New map shows before/after effects of Carr Fire

The devastating effects of the Carr Fire on properties within the City of Redding are now visible in a striking aerial map produced by the City’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division.

Through the use of licensed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated by a trained team of public safety professionals, the new map provides views of areas after they were ravaged by the Carr Fire. Using a sliding “window,” viewers can see the “before and after” aerial images of properties affected. Utilizing the City’s existing GIS mapping, viewers can see individual parcels and significant detail from both before and after the fire.

Post-fire aerial photos were collected as part of a multi-agency collaboration. Licensed UAV pilots from Menlo Park Fire District, Alameda County Sheriff, Contra Costa Sheriff, and other agencies assisted the City in capturing the aerial photos.
The before/after map is a successor to an earlier aerial map that showed 360-degree views of selected neighborhoods, also using the UAVs. Both maps, and others, are available at the Shasta County/City of Redding website, www.ShastaReddingRecovers.org. Click on the Carr Fire Maps button.

The ShastaReddingRecovers.org site offers other helpful maps to assist Carr Fire victims during the recovery. One shows the progress of inspections by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for hazardous materials on burned property sites. Others depict the complete area affected by the fire and the specific structures damaged or destroyed.
