A total of fifty-four students and teachers attended the Shasta College 29th Annual Trimathelon Mathematics Contest hosted by the Shasta College Math Department. Schools competing this year were Enterprise High School, Etna High School, Las Plumas High School, Red Bluff High School, and Shasta High School. Teachers from the above high schools each brought two to six, two-person teams to compete in the events. Combining scores from competing in three events determines the champion. The champion of this year’s Trimathelon Mathematics Contest was, Enterprise High School! For each of the three events there were specific winners.
The winner of the Chalk Talk event was Enterprise High School represented by Adam Shoff. This event requires participants to do research and give a ten-minute presentation on “The Mathematics Behind Speedcubing”. The second place winner was Etna High School represented by Aurora Boudro and Cole Thompson.
The winner of the Dragon Slayer Derby was Las Plumas School represented by Sydney Howard and Hikmat Abou Shahla. This event has two-person teams solving problems that may involve puzzles, logic, or critical thinking. The second place winner was Red Bluff High School represented by Dax Wagner and Garrett Gould.
The winner of the Applied Problem Solving event was Shasta High School represented by Noah De Los Santos and Thomas Maclean. This event also uses two-person teams, but they solve problems that are realistic applications of mathematics. The second place winner was Enterprise High School represented by Jasmine Saechao and Jeremy Brown.
Students also participate in an Estimation Golf event. Teams are given very short periods of time to estimate the answers to mathematical expressions. As in golf, the low score is the winner. Winners this year were Amanda McCandless and Isaac Sorrells.
Winners received trophies and prizes. The prizes were donated by Texas Instruments, the Shasta College Bookstore, and the Shasta College Math Department. Lunches were provided by the Shasta College Foundation. This is the twenty-ninth year the event has been held.
