What: Bicentennial Latino Independence Day Fiesta at Anderson River Park

When: Sep 12, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: KC Grove in Anderson River Park

If ‘World History’ wasn’t your favorite class in High School, then you’re probably unaware that the American Revolution of 1776 had a very strong impact on Mexican, South and Central American patriots who began their long fight for independence and democracy. “El Grito” (or, the Cry of Independence), is the Latino celebration to attend. This September, Latinos from Mexico and Chile will especially celebrate 200 years of independence from brutal Spanish rule.

On September 12, 2010, Mexican – and other Latino Independence Days – will be passionately celebrated at Anderson River Park from 11:30am to 4:30pm, in the KC Grove section away from the crowds and next to the cool Sacramento River. In a display of genuine unity and respect, local Latino-Americans will honor those who perished and served in the 9-11 World Trade Center attacks.

While there will not be independence fireworks, an annual favorite among northstaters will return! The official NHLC championship, Northern California “Hot Mouth” Jalapeño Eating Contest, will be blasting off at 1 pm!

Shasta County’s 14th Annual Latino Independence Day and Family Fair Fiesta will have plenty of delicious traditional foods and drinks, authentic musicians, “Ginetes” (Mexican cowboys and their amazing dancing horses). With activities for the kids, games and raffles, there will be plenty to enjoy. This is a true family event – so be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets for the music and folkloric dancers (smoking areas are outside of the event, no alcohol on site).

All proceeds from this event go directly to a scholarship fund for local youth. This event is sponsored by Shasta County’s Northern Hispanic Latino Coalition, Redding Rancheria, Wells Fargo Bank, Shasta College, Americorps and Shasta County Public Health.
