Yikes! Today is the last MarketFest. Whatta we gonna do after this, pay for music? Ouch.
Anyway, the California Honeydrops from Oakland close out the summer series in downtown Redding’s Library Park from 5 to 9 p.m. Should be a lot of dancing going on. And I say, let the drum circle go on to 10 p.m.!
If you’re hankering for a lot more music beyond Thursday, Cascade Theatre, keep cool, babies, I got your back. I went out and beyond for ya, and here’s what I came up with:
Close to home
First off, a quick review of the upcoming Cascade Theatre shows:
Los Lonely Boys on Sept. 16 (tickets are $39-$49). You know what you’re getting here, right? Big guitar playing, Tex-Mex blues, great harmonies. (Check out the band’s website. Kind of cool desert theme.)
The North State Symphony opens its season Sept. 26. It also has a children’s concert on Sept. 25.
Love the shows in October, including Pink Martini on Oct. 5, Vince Gill on the 9th, Ingrid Michaelson on the 10th and Joan Osborne /the Holmes Brothers /Paul Thorn on the 16th. The Osborne-Holmes Brothers-Thorn show is a must-see as far as I can figure.
As far as upcoming club shows, Slam Buckra is playing the Vintage Wine Bar on Saturday night. Monk , a reggae band from Ashland, Ore., is playing Friday and Saturday nights at the North Star Brewery in Shasta Lake. Wesley Jensen is playing Sept. 4 at the Downtown Eatery.
Chico
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.
There’s some stuff to get hot and bothered by at Laxson Auditorium at Chico State University. First off, jazz legend Wynton Marsalis on Sept. 18 (during the Chico World Music Festival). Then, hello!, Gillian Welch on Oct. 4. (A while back I had a trippy dream about meeting Gillian Welch. That darn David Rawlings was there, too. He’s always there. Just because he plays so great. He was wearing some silk suit. Whatever. Am I talking out loud?)
Anyway, check out Chico Performances, because later in the year there are artist like Sam Bush-Jerry Douglas-Edgar Meyer, Tommy Emmanuel (you can’t believe this guitar player), The Chieftains, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Garrison Keillor. Also, the Hag on Sept. 29! It’s a pretty nice series.
At the Big Room at Sierra Nevada : The Fabulous Thunderbirds on Sept. 8; Southern Culture on the Skids and Los Straitjackets on Sept. 14 (Redding’s Rockin’ Ron will be there); and Albert Cummings, Tommy Shannon (of Double Trouble) and George Rains on Sept. 28.
Dunsmuir
Slade Cleaves
Sengthong’s Blue Sky Room is back to booking some excellent shows. Look out for David Jacobs-Strain on Sept. 4 and Slade Cleaves on Sept. 14. Slade is quite simply one of the best songwriters in the country and he has a fantastic new album out: "Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away" (I know, not that uplifting of a title).
Check out Sengthong’s — they also have Roy Rogers, Will Bernard and Incendio (who we just opened up for at Woofstock and they were great).
Southern Oregon
Did you forget about the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Ore.?
Oh, maybe there’s no reason to pay attention. There’s a few artists you may have heard of with upcoming shows there: Chris Isaak, Sheryl Crow, Michael Franti (sold out), Gov’t Mule (man, I’d love to see that show — love that Warren Haynes), Crosby-Stills-Nash, and James Taylor.
Palms Playhouse in Winters
You know about this place ? Killer little music venue not that far away. I’ve see Junior Brown a couple times there. They do a ton of music there.
My picks from upcoming Palms shows?: Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women (Sept. 2), The Mother Hips (Sept. 11) and Blame Sally (Oct. 10).
OK, that’s it. I’m all worn out (that’s a lot of linking). What did I miss?
