Corner Booth: News Autopsy

Every time I type “Corner Booth,” it comes out “Coroner Booth” and I have to back up and fix it. Over 20 years reporting for newspapers and another 20 years writing crime fiction, I’ve typed “coroner” a lot more times than “corner.” Looks like that’s changing.

  • I’m a new member of the Shasta Public Libraries Citizens’ Advisory Committee, and attended my second meeting on Wednesday. We voted to recommend that the staff put up signs, etc., to tell patrons that cell phone conversations are off-limits upstairs in the Redding Library. It’s gotten pretty noisy up there, particularly around the public computer area. Downstairs — in the outer lobby or in the hustle-bustle zone around the front desk — makes more sense for those who must use their cell phones. I would prefer they do it underwater somewhere, but I’m only one vote.
  • Vroom. It’s been a year since Need 2 Speed opened its indoor kart racing business downtown. To celebrate, Need 2 Speed is offering special prizes and race giveaways all day Sunday.  The owners say they’ve had more than 25,000 customers in the first year. More info at n2sKarts.com.
  • Ron Largent, a frequent contributor to A News Cafe, reports that his realty firm, Keller Williams, is having a grand opening Jan. 22 to celebrate its new, larger location at 2165 Larkspur in Redding.
  • Mercy Medical Center in Redding hosts a free lecture on the human body’s vascular system next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Should be especially interesting to people concerned about stroke or vascular disease. Lecture will be presented by Drs. Hatter, Schepps, Miller and Chin. Register at redding.mercy.org.
