Woman, Infant Rescued from Sacramento River

On October 20, 2017 at 11:14 a.m., Redding Police officers responded to a medical assist call in the area of Park Marina Dr. under the Cypress Ave. bridge. The caller reported finding a 7 month old baby girl and her mother floating in the Sacramento River. When medical aid arrived they transported the 7 month old baby to Mercy Medical Center where she was stabilized and then flown to UC Davis.

The mother, Kathryn Marie Thompson (37 years) of Redding, was transported to the Redding Police Department Investigations Division. During the interview with Thompson she admitted to entering and trying to cross the Sacramento River with her 7 month old baby girl. Thompson admitted to knowing the dangers of her actions but was listening to voices in her head.

Thompson and her baby were located floating in the River by two fishing boats. The boats were guided by Chris King (46 years) of Redding and Darrin Deel (27 years) of Chico. King and Deel both had clients in their boats when they located Thompson and the baby. When the baby was pulled from the water she was not breathing and was extremely cold. King’s client David Meister (61 years) of Livermore, Ca. provide CPR to the baby and was able to revive her. Due to the quick action of all four fishermen, the lives of Thompson and her 7 month old baby were saved. The 7 month old baby has been admitted to the hospital but is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Thompson was transported and booked into the Shasta County Jail for felony child endangerment and attempted murder.
