REU Customers Benefit from Rate and Fee Decrease

REU customers are expected to have lower electric rates in 2018 and 2019, than they did in 2014.

Late in 2017, Redding City Council approved several rate and fee modifications as recommended by the Redding Electric Utility for the benefit of its customers.

On November 7th, City Council approved the cancellation of a planned 1.5% rate increase in 2018, the elimination of the solar surcharge, and a reduction of the Federal Environmental Surcharge. Together, the changes represent a greater than 2.0% decrease in electric rates. With no plan for a rate increase in 2019, customers may have lower rates through 2019 than in 2014.

On December 5th, City Council approved elimination of two Service Reconnection Fees for reconnection after non-payment and elimination of the Service Transfer Fee, as these services were determined to not create a significant additional cost to the utility. The Priority Service Connection Fee for new customers was also modified to allow free same-day connection if the customer calls before 11 a.m.

Together, the elimination and modification of these fees will save customers approximately $200,000 per year.
REU Director Dan Beans states, “Redding electric residential customers saved over $42 million in fiscal year 16-17 by receiving electricity from its community-owned electric utility rather than PG&E. We will continue to work hard to keep saving our customers money.”

Redding Electric Utility has been providing safe and reliable energy since 1921. For more information visit
