Deputies Involved in Fatal Suicidal Subject Shooting (Updated)

On August 28, 2014 at approximately 8:05 pm, SHASCOM received a report of a suicidal subject at a residence in the 20000 block of Fig Tree Lane. Two Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the location.

Upon arrival, the deputies heard gunshots inside of the residence. A short time later there was a confrontation with a male subject outside of the residence and a fatal officer involved shooting occurred. Neither deputy was injured during the shooting.

The two Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies were placed on paid administrative leave.

The Multi-Agency Critical Incident Protocol was requested by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. The Redding Police Department is the lead investigating agency and is being assisted by the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, the California Highway Patrol and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

In conjunction with the Shasta County Coroner’s Office, the Redding Police Department is releasing the name of the subject who was fatally shot by Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies on August 28, 2014. The subject has been identified as Erik Charles Lebak, 32 years of Redding.

The investigation has revealed that Lebak was suicidal and armed with two firearms, a shotgun and a handgun. Lebak discharged the shotgun at least twice in close proximity to the two deputies. During this timeframe, one of the deputies broadcast on his radio that shots were being fired and they were pinned down to rear of the residence. The deputies were requesting emergency assistance and returned fire, striking Lebak.

An ambulance was requested and arrived shortly thereafter to render medical aid. Lebak was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for next week.
