Succeeding with Natives – Mt. Lassen CNPS Horticulture Symposium September 14

On Sunday September 14th, 2014 the Mt. Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will host a day-long symposium on designing your garden space to include more native plants while at the same time using far less water, creating far less maintenance for yourself, and having more life and beauty than you’ve had till now (registration on-line at: mountlassen.cnps.org)

California native plants can seem daunting. If you’ve tried to work with them and ‘failed’ before, or if you’ve been too intimidated to try them – you now have a perfect opportunity to improve your chances of success by learning from a range of native plant experts – experienced gardeners, horticulturalists, designers and authors in the field.

For a variety of reasons primarily involving their own evolutionary adaptations to survive in the wilds of California’s many different geologic and climactic environments – natives can be a little tricky to work with. But they are far far less tricky with just a little bit of understanding and knowledge born of experience.

Catie Bishop, current president and long-time active member of CNPS at a local and state level understands this from her own experience as a plant person and home gardener – which was the inspiration behind her research and development of this symposium. In a year of extreme drought, where people are actively seeking alternatives to the lawn or other default over-maintained, over-watered landscape, Catie thought this was a good year for CNPS to be proactive in introducing people to the many many joys and benefits of gardening with natives and to provide them with real support and resources for not just trying to add natives but to SUCCEED with them.
